DDDL is the diagnostic application which includes support for Detroit legacy engines EPA 98 - EPA 04 (DDEC III - DDEC V and MBE PLD/MR2 and VCU).
- DDDL requires DiagnosticLink Standard or Professional to be registered prior to accessing the application.
- DDDL is available to download from the ordering system under My Accounts > My Downloads (login required).
- Administrative rights are required (for installation only).
Getting Started
- Windows 10/11 (64 bit)

To establish a connection to engine controller, DDDL must be configured:
- Install a device driver (e.g. Nexiq USB-Link).
- Open DDDL. If not connected to a unit, the application may display an error "The specified device ID is invalid" or similar message. Click Ok.
- Click Close on the Welcome Page.
- Click Tools, Options, and Interface.
- From the dropdown, select the device driver installed from step 1 (e.g. USB-Link if using a Nexiq USB-Link).
- Click Ok.
To connect to vehicle or ECU on the bench, connect to interface device to computer USB port and to the vehicle 9-pin and turn ignition on.
Technical Support
If DDDL (Detroit Diesel Diagnostic Link) 6.50 fails to connect, please check the following:
Configure the interface device in DDDL
- Verify that the ECM is supported by DDDL (e.g. must be an EPA 98-04 Detroit DDEC III, IV, V or an EPA 98-04 MBE 900/4000 PLD/VCU/MR2).
- Verify that the correct VCI (vehicle communicaiton interface) is selected. To check, from Windows start menu click Detroit Diesel > Diagnostic Link.
- Close the Welcome /Caution Menu.
- Click Tools > Options > Interface.
- Click the 'Local Communicaiton Interface' dropdown and select the appropriate device. (Note: the device driver must be installed prior to configuring the device in this step. For more information or support, please review the hardware manufacturer's user guide, or visit the website, or contact support).
- Select the appropriate device driver (e.g. if using the Nexiq USB-Link2, select USB-Link 2) and click OK.
- Click OK to accept the changes.
- Close DDDL.
- Turn on the ignition.
- Connect USB cable from the VCI to the laptop/desktop's USB port.
- Connect the 9-Pin adapter cable from the VCI to the vehicle 9-pin diagnostic connector.
- Open DDDL and verify communication.
- If the connection fails, disconnect the USB cable from the computer.
- Close DDDL.
- Cycle the ignition off/on.
- Connet the USB cable to a different available USB port.
- Open DDDL and verify communication.
If DDDL 6.50 freeze or hangs during install, try upgrading to DDDL 6.51. A known issue has been resolved where an obsolete task "CheckWinCVer.exe" could affect the install. Ending the task via Windows Task Manager is an effective work-around.
If running Windows 8, 8.1, or 10:
- Go to Task Manager by holding Control + Alt + Del keys on the keyboard or search for Task Manager and hit enter.
- Click the View tab from the Task Manager tool bar.
- For Group by type, select Expand all.
- For the Status vaules, select Show suspended status.
- Select CheckWinVersion.exe and click End Task.
- Complete the DDDL installation.
The errors: 'Failed to launch help', 'Feature not inlcuded', or 'Help not supported' refers to the legacy help file format .HLP that is no longer supported by Microsoft Windows 7, 8, 8.1, and Windows 10.
To resolve for Windows 7, 8, and 8.1, click here to visit the Microsoft Resolution section for instrucitons.
To resolve for Windows 10, use instrucitons below:
- Open Windows Explorer and navigate to C:\Program Files (x86)\Detroit Diesel\Diagnostic.
- Double-click DDDL.chm. (If you cannot locate the file, search local disk C:\ for DDDL.CHM). If the file cannot be located, download a copy from the Downloads section and save to desktop).
- Double-click DDDL.chm to verify it opens.
- Create a shortcut to the .CHM help file. Right-click the Windows Desktop and select New > Shortcut.
- Enter C:\Program Files (x86)\Detroit Diesel\Diagnostic.
- Type a name for the shortcut (e.g. DDDL Help Menu) and click Finish.
- Use this shortcut to access the DDDL Help menu when needed.
The error: 'Feature not Include' refers to the legacy Troubleshooting manual file format .HLP which is no longer supported by Microsoft Windows 7 - Windows 10.
To resolve, use a supported format such as .CHM
- Click on the desired Troubleshooting manual file from the DDDL support page download section (e.g. DDEC II-IV, DDEC V, or MBE).
- Save the file(s) to the local file path: C:\Program Files (x86)\Detroit Diesel\Diagnostic
- Double-click the file to confirm compatibility (e.g. TShoot234.chm, TShootV.chm, or TShootMBE.chm).
- Create a shortcut to the .CHM help file(s). Right-click the Windows Desktop and select New > Shortcut.
- Enter C:\Program Files (x86)\Detroit Diesel\Diagnostic.
- Type a name for the shortcut (e.g. DDEC II TS Guide, DDEC V TS Guide, or MBE TS Guide) and click Finish.
- Use this shortcut to access the DDDL Troubleshooting when needed.
The response 'Wrong Connection Type' may indicate one of the following:
- The wrong interface setup in DRS has been selected. To check or change, go to Windows Start, All Programs, Detroit Diesel and open DRS Comm Settings and select Protocol=J1708, Interfadce=USB Link2 (if using the Nexiq USB Link2), Baud Rate=9600 and click Ok.
- The wrong network connection option has been selected. To check, go to Windows Start, All Programs, Detroit Diesel and open DDC Mainframe Communicaitons, and click update logon parameters. Connect via Internet should be checked. If not, select and click Save.
- The cable connection is wrong. For Example: if programming a PLD/MR2, user must be connected directly to PLD on the bench.
If the application fails to install due to an error response 'The file .dll could not be opened' or similar, this may indicate a Windows permission issue. To resolve, try running setup as administrator in compatiability mode:
- Save the DDDLSetup.exe file to the local machine (e.g. Desktop)
- Right-click the DDDLSetup.exe file and select Properties
- Click on the Compatibility tab
- Place a check mark for both options 'Run this program in compatibility mode for Windows XP SP2' and 'Run this Program as an administrator'
- Click OK
- Right-click the DDDLSetup.exe and select 'Run as administrator'
- Follow the setup guide to complete the installation.
